KC-135 Boom Operator Trainer
Locations: Altus AFB, OK

Functional Areas: 3.2, 3.3, 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 3.16, 3.18, 3.19

ACME, with program technical responsibility, was initially tasked to evaluate the two trainers to identify a path to restore the two trainers to operational status while simultaneously improving system reliability, maintainability, and supportability. The results of the evaluation indicated that, essentially, the entire trainer needed to be refurbished and upgraded. Approximately eight months after the submittal of the evaluation report, a contract option to completely upgrade the two trainers was exercised by the Air Force.

The major features of the trainer upgrade addressed the following areas:
• Replaced the existing host computer and re-hosted the trainer aerodynamic code on a new PC-based host computer
• Developed a new graphical user interface based instructor operator station
• Replaced the single channel visual system with a new PC based image generator and rear projection screen display system
• Developed a two channel, electric control loading system to provide force feedback
• Replaced the aural cueing system and install a digital intercom system which matches the aircraft configuration.
Completely refurbished the student station while simultaneously replacing all trainer instrumentation, signal I/O, wiring, and cabling. ACME performed the requirements analysis, engineering design, visual modeling, reliability and maintainability analysis, engineering support, documentation, and sustainment of the system.
